CURATION

I love to bring artists and audiences together. I use curation as an excuse to throw big and small parties that make people feel cared for. Here are some of my favourite curatorial projects to date.

F.O.L.A. [AKL] – FESTIVAL OF LIVE ART [AUCKLAND]

I am the Co Artistic Director F.O.L.A. [AKL] – a haven for those subversive, dirty, playful, humorous and above all daring artists who make life so much better by being in the world. Neoliberal and capitalist structures have been notoriously poor at creating space for Live Art and artists in general. F.O.L.A. [AKL] is here to change that.

Live Art is typically practiced in Aotearoa by Artists who dwell in the most potent of political intersections (feminist, Queer and BIPOC). It is not surprising then, that this work has been underrepresented in the western-colonial-capitalist regime within which we live in today. But the most accurate picture of living in Aotearoa comes straight through the eyes of these very artists and we want to share that with the world.

F.O.L.A. [AKL] is about building a community of artists and safeguarding their artform, livelihoods and legacies by creating new models within which they can flourish. Apart from innovative content, the festival is led through care, responsibility and responsiveness to uphold Aotearoa’s most forward thinking artists.

But F.O.L.A. [AKL] is also our excuse to throw a big goddamn beautiful party.  Because while it’s been a relief not to wear pants for the past two years, life is just so much sexier when we’re together.

BASEMENT THEATRE

From 2019 – 2023 I directed the program at Auckland’s Basement Theatre, a feisty, independent arts space that develops and platforms Auckland’s best emerging and experimental artists. Basement Theatre is known for being the starting point for many big brave makers and leaders in the Aotearoa arts scene. I feel grateful to have led artists through the Covid-19 pandemic. They taught me everything I know about how to curate with care.

LIVE DREAMS – ANCESTRY (LIVEWORKS)

In 2021 I was invited to curate a line up of 10 minute digital experiments for Liveworks, an experimental festival held annually through Performance Space on Gadigal Land, Sydney. I curated 6 artists from across Aotearoa and Australia to respond to the theme of Ancestry, Works that channel forgotten, stolen or repressed creativity through remembering one’s ancestry.

Here is a talk between myself and Liveworks Artistic Director, Jeff Khan.

Artists: Vicky Forest Kapo, Marc Conaco, Amit Noy, Raina Peterson, Morgan Hogg, Jahra Wassasala & Ooshcon (CONJAH)
